Thrift for an elevated formal look without breaking the bank

Formal wear doesn’t have to come with a high price — especially if you know where to shop. In this episode of ITK: Thrift Talk, our host and thrifting expert Siena Filippi (@simply.siena) takes us along for a shopping trip with her bestie, Kendall Hoyt (@kjhoyt), as they hunt for the perfect formal look.

Finding a formal gown in a thrift shop is a lot easier than most people would think. “The thing about shopping vintage for a fancy dress is that a lot of people will donate their fancy dresses after their event is over,” Siena explains.

Shopping at Regeneration (@re_generation) in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, Siena and Kendall need a gown for a gala Kendall is going to attend. Her wish list is something unique and classic that she could potentially upcycle into two pieces. And bonus points if it’s black.

Siena’s first find is a black, sparkly dress with some colorful decorations. Next, she encourages Kendall to step out of her comfort zone a little with some color, selecting a red dress with a square neck and long sleeves. She also wants to find a showstopper, landing on a black halter neck gown with silver embellishments on the bust. Kendall even found earrings that perfectly match.

The next step in creating a formal wear look is accessories. Kendall already has a pair of shoes she wants to wear, so she and Siena head over to the handbag section, where they find a black clutch with embroidered rhinestones that match the showstopper dress.

Even though both shoppers think that the black halter neck gown will be the winner, they decide that Kendall should start by trying on the “crazier” options. As expected, while they both like the red dress and the sparkly black dress, the showstopping halter neck gown is the easy winner.
